Eye Home Remedies

Natural Remedies for Black Eye
The first home remedy for black eye is to get something cold on the eye immediately after it has been struck. The cold will help relieve the swelling of the eye. Your best choice would be a bag of ice. If a bag of ice is not available, a cold can of soda or a bag of frozen vegetables will work. However, it isn't recommended that you put steak on your eye... like you see on television. Raw meat does nothing to help heal a black eye!

Besides ice for 20 minutes on & off, elevate the head, even when sleeping. Arnica, pellets by mouth and topical cream, is a wonderful plant remedy that treats the pain & bruising and can be used liberally with absolutely no side effects. Don't use aspirin, as it's anti-coagualant effects can prolong/spread the buising .Arnica oil ( Arnica in olive oil is the most potent form, but will stain clothing so is best used at night). It is all available at health food stores. Take good care of yourself.
Treat a black eye using a potato - For those of you who keep their potatoes in the fridge this is a good remedy for a black or bruised eyes. Peel the potato and cut a round slice just under half a cm thick. Lay down for half an hour with a slice of cold potato over your eyes. This works great.

A beefy semi frozen steak is still the best remedy. The vitamins in the meat help. or pack ice in a plastic bag keep area covered for at least 1hr and the black eye never materializes. Depending on severity of the injury may require as long as 2 days for swelling or fractures of the face. but guaranteed no black eye if catch it within a 1/2 hour of injury and you keep the area well below body temperature long enough.

The person is not sleeping well at night permanently will likely to get black eyes. Even though you think you are when you do not dream in the sleep. Deep and restful sleep is the only way to cure black eyes. Sleeping pills will make worse. The only cure will be from alternative remedy, rest for 15 minutes without thinking about anything or practice meditate before bed time. You have really set your mind to do it.

As soon as you get a black eye, head for the refrigerator and place something cold on your eye. The best solution will be a bag of ice. However, if you cannot lay your hands on the same, a cold can of soda or a bag of frozen vegetables will work as good. The cold treatment will prevent your eye from swelling. Continue the treatment for at least one day.

Peel and grate a potato (a red potato is best). Make a poultice out of it and keep it on the black eye for 20 minutes. Potassium chloride is one of the most effective healing compounds, and potatoes are the best source of potassium chloride. (This remedy is also beneficial for bloodshot eyes.)

Vitamin e is a great skin brightener too

      Preventing Puffy Eyes:

Stay hydrated!!! If you are thirsty, you are dehydrated. When properly hydrated, your urine will be nearly clear. (Note that some drugs and foods can alter the color of your urine.)

Lower your salt intake. The body can only store salt in fluid suspension - which will gather in the skin around your eyes. (Bonus: Lowering your salt consumption can improve your overall health.)

Never sleep wearing eye make-up. Regardless of how tired you may be, always use an eye make-up remover and continue until the cotton ball or pad shows no signs of make-up. Use a cotton pad rather than a tissue because it is less irritating. Removing eye make-up will prevent it from entering the eyelid and causing irritation.

Beware of bacteria. Speaking of eye make-up…Do not use mascara or any other eye product that is older than a few months. Bacteria that have grown in the make-up would love a new home in your eyes, and will cause your eyelids to swell. On this note it is probably a good idea not to share your eye products with anyone else either.

Be sure you get enough quality, regular sleep.

Sleep with your head elevated to allow better circulation and prevent fluid from collecting around your eyes.

Sleep on your back so that gravity does not route fluid directly to your eyes.

      Getting Rid of Puffy Eyes:

Dip cotton balls in ice cold cucumber or potato juice and let rest on eyes for 10-15 min

Wear a mask that is filled with cold water or gel for a few minutes when you wake up in the morning.

Wrap pieces of ice in paper towels and place them on your eyelids for a few minutes. The cold will reduce the swelling.

Keep your eye creams in the refrigerator. The cool cream will help reduce your puffy eyes. When applying the cream, gently tap it onto your eyelid with your ring finger, so as to stimulate fluid drainage.

Soak cotton-wool pads in a bowl of ice-cold milk and then squeeze most of the liquid out. Place the pads on your eyes and repeat as they warm up for about 15 minutes. This will also brighten the white in your eye.

Dip cotton balls in ice water, and then squeeze the water out. Apply the cotton balls to your eyes for 5-10 minutes.

Place black or chamomile teabags soaked in cold water on your eyelids for 15 minutes. The tannic acid in tea will constrict the blood vessels and reduce inflammation. To accelerate drainage, gently press from the inside corner to the outside corner of the swollen eye.

Place slices of cucumber, potatoes, or apple over the puffy eyelids for 10-15 minutes. Potatoes will reduce dark circles under the eyes and apples have pectin which aids in anti-oxidation.

Give your eyes a salt bath by soaking cotton pads in a saline solution or a solution of one teaspoon of salt in one pint of hot water. Place the pads on your puffy eyelids for a few minutes.

Apply a hemorrhoid cream to the puffy area around the puffy eye, being EXTREMELY CAREFUL not to get any in your eye. Be sure to look for a cream that contains yeast and shark’s liver oil.

  8. QUESTION:
Any remedies for dark under eye circles? Home remedies or any others that have worked for you?
I'm only in my teens and I have crazy dark undereye circles I get nine hours of sleep, and I have tried potatoes, cucumber, and ice, and they don't help. I kow that they're hereditary, but when there's a will there's a way so please help! What has worked for you? (don't say concealer plz)

    • ANSWER:
Nine times out of ten, this is your body's way of telling you that you don't get enough sleep. Believe it or not, teens are actually supposed to get 12 hours of sleep every night. Try getting more sleep, it could help. Also, make sure you keep hydrated.

There is no way to get rid of hereditary (meaning that your parents have them) undereye circles. This happens when the tiny blood vessels under your eye break and leak blood into the space around the cells under the eye. Laser treatments help, but they will not cure them. I've been trying since I was a teen too. The only thing you can do is hide them. Sorry, I know that's not what you were looking for. The best product that I have used is called Well Rested by baremineras. It works great!

if you think your child has pinkeye, it's important to contact your doctor to try to determine what's causing it and how to treat it. Other serious eye conditions can mimic conjunctivitis, so a child who complains of severe pain, changes in eyesight, or sensitivity to light should be reexamined. If the pinkeye does not improve after 2 to 3 days of treatment, or after a week when left untreated, call your doctor.

  19. QUESTION:
Home remedies for eye redness and swelling from sleep.?
When ever i wake up, my eyes are always extremeley red. Right away, I always get my visine and put some in. I know the visine isnt the best for me so im trying to cut down on it. Also the visine doesnt help with the swelling of my eyes. I really need some help because its very annyoning. ALso any remedies for bloodshot eyes would be great too.

    • ANSWER:
When you wake up, get a wash cloth, run it under very warm water, ring it out and then gently scurb/massage your eyes right where the eyelashes grow in. The heat helps to stimulate your tears. Do this twice a day, morning and evening. You may also wish to supplement with artificial tears (nothing that says "get the red out"), preferably preservative free about 4 times per day. At night, you can also put in an ointment like Refresh PM to keep your eyes moist when you sleep. It's goopy, but you can wash it away with the lid scubs in the morning. If none of this helps...see your doctor.

  20. QUESTION:
Cat with Herpes of the Eye? Home Remedies....She's been to a few vets one told me she had allergies, another?
that she hit herself in the eye...the last vet said she had Herpes in her eye/an infection or something and the medicine worked it was neomycin/bactrin/? mixture. Well, she's got it again and it's really bad but I can't afford to take her to the vet until my next paycheck (two weeks)...I've got twenty bucks....that's it. What can I do...are there any home remedies?...a family member suggested putting neospirin for kids in her eye...but I'm not so sure about that..what would you do in my situation?...my cat seems so miserable.

    • ANSWER:
Go to a health store and get some L-lysine. Costs about 6 bucks. It's a vitamin for humans but is used for cats with Herpes. You can give up to 1000mg a day. Buy the capsules. Open it up and mix in her food. Do not put neosporin in her eyes, this could make her blind! This should clear her eyes until you can see the vet but if it gets worse, do not wait.

I suggest you go to this group. They are great people and might be able to help you. They have helped me in the past to control symptoms for my Herpes cat.

  24. QUESTION:
What are some home remedies for pink eye(conjunctivitis)
What are some home remedies for pink eye?
What are some ways to shorten the time of the infection?

    • ANSWER:
If it is bacterial pink eye no home remedies can treat it. You will need antibiotic ointment.

Pink eye can show up when you least expect it, and it is very contagious. There is more than one type of pink eye, and how you treat it depends on the type. If it is bacterial you need antibiotic ointment or drops. There is no particular treatment for viral pink eye. If it is an allergy that is causing your difficulty you may need anti-inflammatories or antihistamines. Frequent hand washing is crucial to prevent spreading the virus or bacteria, depending on which type you have. There is also something called CLARE, or contact lens induced acute red eye. Sleeping in contacts makes the eye more susceptible to inflammation/infection.

  25. QUESTION:
DO I HAVE PINK EYE? Home remedies?
It started with a soar throat and swollen glands. And now, My eyes are a little sore, I have white discharge that comes very frequently, but my eyes DON"T ITCH! Has anyone had this problem before. ANYONE KNOW HOME REMEDIES??

And please don't say see a doctor that is common sense and i am if symptoms get worse. I'm looking for smart responses, not obvious ones a two year old can tell me. THANK YOU!

    • ANSWER:
Pin eye typically doesn't affect your throat or your glands.

      Viral Conjunctivitis Symptoms
      * Watery eyes accompanied with discharge are usual.
      * Discomfort in the eye with itchiness maybe present.
      * The infection usually affects one eye but can move to both.

      * Bacterial Conjunctivitis Symptoms
      * Watery eyes followed with yellow or green discharge are natural occurrences.
      * Irritation can be found along with an itchy feeling.
      * The infection usually starts with one eye and can spread to the other.

      Allergic Conjunctivitis Symptoms
      * Heavy tearing, discomfort, and itchiness affecting both eyes are especially likely.

Doesn't sound like you have pink eye, possibly mono.

The initial symptoms of mono are:
      * a general lack of energy or malaise,
      * a loss of appetite, and
      * chills.

These initial symptoms can last from one to three days before the more intense symptoms of the illness begin. The more common intense symptoms include:
      * a severe sore throat,
      * fever, and
      * swollen glands (lymph nodes) in the neck area.

It is typically the severe sore throat that prompts people to contact their doctor.

In addition to a fever from 102 to 104 F, the most common signs of mono are:

      * a very reddened throat and tonsils and
      * swollen lymph glands in the neck.

The tonsils have a whitish coating in at least one-third of the cases. The spleen (sometimes referred to as the body's biggest lymph node) is an organ found in the left upper abdomen underneath the rib cage which becomes enlarged or swollen in about 50% of patients with mono. An enlarged liver may also occur. About 5% of patients have a splotchy red rash over the body, which has a similar appearance to the rash of measles.

I know you said don't say it, but SEE A DOCTOR, don't wait until it gets worse, mono is contagious. See a doctor as soon as you can.

Home remedies to help get rid of pink eye?
My girlfriend has pink eye and it's hurting her pretty bad. Any home remedies to help it feel better?
It is a disease... It causes the eye to be swollen and it is painful.

    • ANSWER:
Go to the pharmacy and buy over the counter antibiotic drops (such as Neosporin).

If it doesn't get better after 24 hours—or if it gets worse—she'll need to see a doctor or an optometrist to get a prescription for something stronger.

You don't want to put any "at home" remedy in her eye: it's not sterile and it could only damage her eye.

  34. QUESTION:
How do you treat pink eye [any home remedies?]//IS this pink eye?
I work at a daycare, and recently this kid had to be sent home for what we thought was pink eye [his eyes were bloodshot and he couldn't keep his hands away]. We sanitized basically everything, but when his mom came back, she said he didn't have pink eye [we're still unsure if it really was pink eye... but majority is saying it was]

My left eye is sort of gunky, and sort of red- it's not itchy, but it's irritated

Are there any basic stuff I can do to make it go away [if atleast make it go by faster?]

    • ANSWER:
There are a lot of different kinds of pink eye: but mainly viral and bacterial. However, dry eyes, corneal abrasions, or even ocular allergies can sometimes be confused with "pink eye." The official word for pink eye is conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the clear covering that goes over the white part of your eye.

Your best bet is to go to your optometrist and see what kind of "pink eye" you have. There's no way to really diagnose it over Yahoo Answers. Just FYI--viral conjunctivitis can be HIGHLY contagious for the first week or so; I would recommend getting it checked out before you head back to work with a bunch of little kids.

I have purple under eye circles. I do get enough sleep and I'm not low in iron as shown in my blood work. It's just hereditary. I don't like using concealer because it's full of chemicals and parabens. Does anyone know of any natural remedies that work? Thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
I have the same problem too and I absolutely hate looking like ricky the raccoon.I have found keeping out of the sun or at least making sure I use an eye cream that has a sunscreen in it and sunglasses helps.I'm going to try the tomato thing anything is worth a try. so far I have yet to find a cream that helps or a concealer that covers like I want it to. dark under eye circles like ours are caused by thin skin under our eyes and the blood vessels show through. allergies can also aggravate the condition too so don't rub.

  37. QUESTION:
Are their any good home remedies for pink eye in a child?
My daughter seems to get pink eye all the time and the Dr just keeps giving her medicated drops. Does anyone know of anything else that I can try?

    • ANSWER:
Hi! Yes! We have an old Greek home remedy - make a pot of chamomile tea and really let the tea bag steep in there a while, when its cooled down quite a bit, pour some into a small bowl and get a clean washcloth, and a towel. Drape your daughter with the towel to catch the spillage, and dip the washcloth into the chamomile tea. Squeeze some into your daughters eye, flooding it and letting it spill out of her eye in a "cleansing action". Repeat several times. Let her rest, then do it every couple of hours.

My boyfriend recently had pink eye, so I looked up natural remedies on the internet, and low and behold, my family's chamomile remedy kept coming up. So I did that and I also gave him Reiki (I am a Reiki Master). His pink eye was gone in about 3 or 4 days.

Hope your daughter gets well soon!

  39. QUESTION:
What are some at home remedies for pink eye?
Please help! It really burns. Im fourteen by the way. And i want it to be gone by monday, because im going to school. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
If it is a viral case of pink eye, you may need to get a prescription from your doctor. If it is bacterial pink eye, it may or may not go away on it's own.

I would recommend going to the drugstore and buying some Polysporin Medicated Eye Drops. These are made to help pink eye heal quickly, and thy're pretty cheap. You can also a cool compresses to your affected eye to decrease swelling etc. Just wet a clean washcloth with cold water, press gently on your closed eye for a minute, and then remove. Don't use the washcloth after it's touched your eye though!

Last but not least, try to clean and replace any makeup that you've been using around your eyes. Sharpen eyeliners, wipe eyeshadows off, and replace your mascara if you use it. Or else it could come back!

  40. QUESTION:
Does anyone know if these home remedies for under eye circles actually work?
So I do have dark circles, but I always cover them up with concealer. I'm pretty sick of that and trying to use less makeup. So does Almond oil, Vitamin E oil, or cucumber slices actually work to at least reduce them?

    • ANSWER:
Hey there, ive had dark circles for the longest time and ive recently tried cucumber slices. It worked with minimal help so i did a bit more research on dark circles (i do a lot of researching for my skin :P ).What i do is max a quick mixture of tomato juice and lemon juice. Soak up the liquid with a cotton ball and then dab under the eye. Then apply the cucumber slices and let all the juices sink into the skin.

There are may reasons for dark circles. One of they main ones is a lack of sleep. This can make skin appear more pale, which allows blood vessels to be more visible through the skin, giving the appearance of bluish-green or dark circles.
Dark circles under the eyes also can be genetic. They tend to be more noticeable in people with fair skin or deep-set eyes.
Also, it could be a sign of dehydration.

to prevent dark circles, apply this remedy to your skin 1-2 times daily based on how bad your circles are. Make sure to drink lots of water and yes, vitamin E would most definitely help heal the dark circles as well. And lastly, make sure you get 8-9 hours of sleep every night!!!! Sleep will also help cleanse your skin.

If you have any other questions or are interested in any other home remedies, feel free to email me :)

      Hope i helped

      Eye Puffiness :
-The classic 'Cucumber slices' or even thin potato slices (cooled down)
-Make black tea, highly concentrated, let it cool down, soak paper towel in the cooled down tea, lie down with eyes closed letting the soaked paper towel rest on your eyes.
-Beat egg whites and apply it to the puffiness, when it dries, it stretches out the skin
-Splash your face 15 times with warm water, then 15 times with cool water (also great for the skin and closes pores!)

    Home Remedies for eye infection?
I do not have health insurance currently and am having problems with my sons eyes. I was wondering if there is any home remedies for a sinus infection that makes the eyes puffy and swollen and makes them have discharge. My son needs to go to daycare because I have to go grocery shopping on the public transit system. Can someone please help me Please?!!?!?
He has been to the doctor and they told me it is simply a sinus infection that because his sinus passages are so small they are backed up into his eyes

    • ANSWER:
THIS IS NOT A JOKE!! What I am sharing has been a Godsend for my family and myself for many many decades and is not harmful or dangerous.

First cool the eyes with cold facecloths and/or compresses.

Get a bottle of eye drops for allergies(Clear Eyes/Murine/Optrex) and use liberally.(they may sting a wee bit when first putting them in). If you don't have allergy drops then just regular drops will do.

Apply the cold compresses after you put drops in and keep them on for 10-15 minutes.

Once you've done this twice or three times. then take two teabags (MUST be regular black tea or green tea). Soak the teabags in hot water until they are permeated with the hot water.
Then place the teabags(as warm as your son can stand it) over his closed eyelids.

This is NOT a joke and it is the number one thing I do for my family members anytime they have sore, tired eyes, or are experiencing allergies with itching and swelling..and IT WORKS!
Re soak and re-apply the teabags every 15-20 minutes for at least an hour.
Then re-apply cold compresses for 10-15 minutes.
If eyes haven't improved a lot. Repeat the treatment but use fresh teabags. If it doesn't get rid of the eye problem, it will soothe the eyes and help him relax from the discomfort until you can get him to a doctor.

  43. QUESTION:
Does anyone have any home remedies for pink eye?
I have pinkeye and I want to cure it. Thanks for the help.

    • ANSWER:
Pink eye is typically caused by a infectious agent. If it is viral, there is nothing you can do to cure it, except wait it out. However, if you are experiencing yellow/green discharge, it is probably bacterial. If this is the case, you need a doctor to prescribe you some anibiotics.

Sometimes you can't tell for sure. You need to go to the doctors office to tell.

Infectious pink eye is highly contagious and you should wash your hands frequently and avoid contact with other people.
